PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical Education at St. Brigid’s is considered an integral aspect of the curriculum. Through frequent participation in Physical Education, children are given opportunities to develop and foster positive lifelong attitudes towards the importance of physical activity. Every student at St. Brigid’s participates in 1hr of specialist Physical Education per week and approximately one other facilitated by the class teacher.

 

Aspects of Physical Education covered across the Year levels

GRADE PREP

Basic motor skills developed :

Running, hopping, jumping, skipping, catching, throwing, kicking, rolling, balancing, twisting and turning.

GRADE ONE / TWO

Complex motor skills developed :

Leaping, dodging, over-arm throwing, dribbling and striking balls, cartwheeling and handstanding.

GRADE THREE / FOUR

Students apply the motor skills previously taught in sports specific activities.

Basic games tactics developed :

Attack/defense, following set rules, understanding the roles of various positions, safety considerations, tasks of officials

GRADE FIVE / SIX

Students apply the motor skills previously taught in sports specific activities.

Strategies developed :

Thinking, communication, cooperation and setting personal goals to enhance/improve performance

Students organize and conduct competitive activities, making decisions about procedures, rules and fair play

Students also have the opportunity to represent St. Brigid’s at interschool sport level

 

Across all year levels at St. Brigid’s :

  • Participation is encouraged in a non threatening environment
  • Students learn the need for safety rules when using equipment, and practice appropriate safety skills and procedures
  • Students gain an understanding of the link between physical activity and a healthy lifestyle
  • Skills are taught through specific, step by step instruction, then practiced in game based situations
  • Students develop an understanding of, and practice in partner/team activities
